Safe Child Policy

Library Board approved in 2021. Updated on 3/5/2024.

The Melrose Park Public Library staff welcome children into the library, but are not responsible for supervising children, of any age, who are unattended by their parents.

• Children 8 years old and under who are not attending a program must be accompanied at all times by a parent, guardian, or caregiver who is at least 14-years-old. A parent, guardian or caregiver must remain in the library while his/her children age 8 or under attend a program. If a child age 8 or under is left unattended at any time, staff will attempt to contact the parent or guardian. If unable to do so within 15 minutes, the Melrose Park police will be contacted.

• Children age 9 or over are welcome to use the library independently; however, responsibility for minors using the library or attending library programs rests solely with the parent/guardian.

• The Melrose Park Public Library will not restrict access to library materials or services to anyone solely on the basis of age. Supervising the use of the library by children is the responsibility of parents or legal guardians, not library staff.

• Library hours are posted and the building is locked promptly at closing. Any children still at the Library at closing will be allowed to use the Library telephone to contact a parent or guardian. While the Library assumes no responsibility for children here at closing, the Staff member-in-Charge and a second staff member may wait up to 15 minutes for a parent to arrive for their child. At that time, if the child still has not been picked up, Melrose Park police will be called. Under no circumstances will a staff member transport a child to another location.
