Patron Rules of Behavior Policy
Library Board approved in 2023.
In order to allow all patrons of the Melrose Park Public Library to safely and comfortably use Library facilities and virtual spaces to the fullest extent s, Library users are expected to abide by the MPPL policies and to respect the rights of others at all times. This includes but is not limited to the following:
1. Patrons must respect personal boundaries when interacting with staff and other patrons. Conversations and behaviors must not disturb, obstruct, threaten, harass, or solicit fellow patrons or staff.
2. Appropriate use of cell phones, and similar electronic devices as well as any other noise, such as loud conversations, should be governed by common sense and courtesy to others using the Library.
3. Smoking and vaping is not allowed inside the Library. The consumption or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs on MPPL property is prohibited. People exhibiting signs of intoxication of substance abuse will be asked to leave.
4. Patrons shall not consume food in the Library building, except in the context of Library programs or public events. Drinks are not allowed in the stacks or at computer stations. Drinks with lids may be consumed in other common areas.
5. Prolonged or habitual sleeping is not allowed.
6. Seating in the Youth Services Area is limited to children under the age of 18 and their caregivers.
7. Weapons such as explosives, firearms, knives, look-alike weapons, or any other objects that can reasonably be considered as weapons, are not permitted on MPPL property.
8. Patrons shall not deface or damage in any way Library materials, furnishings, or property.
10. Patrons are required to dress appropriately and shoes must be worn at all times.
11. Animals are not allowed except as otherwise provided by the law, such as service animals.
12. Personal belongings must be attended to at all times. Responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged items rest with the owner, not with the Library. Personal belongings may not obstruct walkways, aisles, or interfere with the use of shared spaces.
Situations involving patrons not abiding by these or other policies will be handled at the discretion of the
Library Director or the Staff member in charge in consultation with the Board of Trustees and may result
in cost recovery charges, exclusion from Library spaces and from the use of Library services, and
prosecution.
